How to Actually Taste Tequila

A repeatable five-minute method that will change what you buy.

Indiana Loves Tequila Editors · Published · 4 min read

Tasting tequila is not about detecting twelve flavors. It is about noticing texture, agave presence and how long the finish lasts.

  • Pour half an ounce into a small tasting glass, not a shot glass.
  • Let it sit two minutes so the alcohol vapor blows off.
  • Smell with your mouth slightly open.
  • Take a small sip and coat your whole palate before swallowing.
  • Count the finish. Longer and smoother almost always means better distillate.
